Fruits that are low in sugar, like kiwis and berries (like strawberries and blueberries), are fantastic for your health and should definitely be part of your diet. On the other hand, fruits that are high in sugar, like mangoes, figs, dates, apples, pears, plums, oranges, and bananas, should be eaten in moderation.
A study showed that eating a low fructose diet, which is low in refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup, was just as effective in improving metabolic syndrome as a modest fructose diet made up of natural fruit. So, you can still eat sugar through healthy fruits and enjoy the benefits of a low sugar diet!
The fiber in fruits helps slow down the absorption of fructose, so you don't get a big sugar "spike" like you would with added sugars in your food. Plus, your intestines can act as a "shield" for up to 4-6 grams of fructose.
And here's a tip: avoid drinking sugar such as coke, sweetened coffee / teas / juice etc and steer clear of foods with added sugar, which is when a food has sucrose or high fructose corn syrup added to it.
And a word of caution - dried fruits aren't the best choice either. You lose all the good things about the fruit, but the fructose stays the same. So, be mindful of your fruit choices and make the most of the healthy options!
