If you are the one getting on the weight scale every day, you must know how common weight fluctuations are in your weight loss journey. A day-to-day variation in your weight is quite normal. But have you ever noticed how rapidly your weight fluctuates during your menstrual cycle?

Yes, this weight fluctuations are amplified during the premenstrual phase. In fact, 63% of women report experiencing a fluctuation in their daily weight, usually an increase, during their perimenstrual cycle.

Why Does This Weight Fluctuate?

You must be wondering why your weight fluctuates during a specific time of the month, even when you are following the same routine and diet. This fluctuation is caused by your hormone levels going up and down.

When you get closer to your menstrual cycle and enter the perimenstrual phase, the level of progesterone decreases, which causes your body to hold more water. And that is what makes your scale go up.

So, the "weight gain" you noticed during that time period is just water weight. It is common to even notice weight fluctuations of up to 5 pounds or more during your cycle. If you do not see any major increase in your scale, you may still feel swollen or bloated as your body is holding some extra water.

What Can You Do?

Well, this weight fluctuation can greatly impact how you feel about your body, which may result in frustration and exhaustion. But it is very normal. The one thing you need to remember is that this will all be gone, and you will be your normal self after this period is over.

If you still find yourself demotivating, skip looking at your scale during this time period. Instead, notice your weight before your perimenstrual phase and then after two to three days, when your periods end. You will notice there is no significant change in it.
