We need to fix the way we think about eating. We go to the negative and extremes. It’s all-or-nothing. Good or bad. We don’t believe we can do it. We care about what other people think. We're afraid that one dietary mistake will derail the entire day. We make ourselves feel guilty for eating certain foods.
There are four eating habits. Which one do you relate to the most?
Fuel Eating: Eating to give your body energy to function during the day. Foods include vegetables, whole grains, fruits, lean proteins and healthy fats. You eat to live, rather than live to eat.
Fun Eating: Eating for pleasure. Foods include Oreos, cake, ice cream, girl scout cookies. You eat to get the dopamine hit in your brain that’s related to addictive behaviors. You live to eat.
Fog Eating: Eating mindlessly. This would be like eating popcorn while watching a movie, grazing at work, or eating nervously at a party.
Storm Eating: Eating uncontrollably past being full. The saying that you can’t eat just one chip, one M&M, etc. comes from this type of eating.
Here's how to cope with your type of eating.
Fuel Eater: Wonderful! A well-rounded diet should be eating these types of food as the core. You’ll find that your mind is more clear, you’ll have more energy, and your body functions better. Don't be a stickler! Make sure to still have some fun foods in your diet.
Fun Eater: That’s fine! Just make sure you eat these foods in moderation. Slowly begin to incorporate fuel eating and eventually center your diet around it. Make sure you continue to still do some fun eating!
Fog Eater: Be mindful while eating. Change what you eat and how you eat. Want to space out and keep eating? That’s fine, just make sure it’s broccoli. Want to continue to eat fun food? That’s fine. Just make sure you’re paying attention to your portions.
Storm Eater: Mix fuel and fun foods. This will slowly help you decrease storm eating and eventually disappear. Begin to increase fuel foods while slowly start eating fun foods in moderation.
Let's summarize: We often approach eating with negative and extreme mindsets, fearing mistakes and feeling guilty about food choices. There are four eating habits: Fuel Eating for energy, Fun Eating for pleasure, Fog Eating mindlessly, and Storm Eating uncontrollably. Coping strategies vary based on your eating type: Fuel Eaters benefit from a balanced diet with occasional treats, Fun Eaters should moderate indulgences while incorporating nutritious foods, Fog Eaters should practice mindfulness and portion control, and Storm Eaters can gradually incorporate more nutritious foods to reduce overeating tendencies.
