Why am I always hungry?

Updated: Feb 3, 2023

Hey guys! Have you ever wondered why you get hungry even if you just ate a meal? Well, it's all thanks to a hormone called ghrelin. It's the hormone responsible for making us feel hungry.

But the good news is, you can control ghrelin by fasting. That's right! When you fast, you eat less and your body adapts to feeling full more easily with less food. That's why people often say "my stomach shrank," but what's really happening is they're controlling their ghrelin levels. And even better news for us ladies - this change happens more dramatically for us!

You see, ghrelin comes in waves throughout the day. When it starts to rise, you'll start to feel hungry. But in just a couple of hours, your ghrelin levels will start to decrease and your hunger will go away. This happens whether you eat or not. Studies have shown that your hunger wouldn't be any different if you didn't eat for 33 hours or just one day. So next time you're feeling hungry, remember that it's just a temporary feeling and it'll go away in a couple of hours.

Ghrelin measured every 20min for patients going through a 33 hour fast

However, because it comes in peaks and waves, your hunger will come back but remember that it will go away again. The peaks come when your body is expecting to eat. People who ate three times a day were put on a long fast and saw their ghrelin spike during lunch, dinner, and the next days breakfast(before awakening)

It's also worth mentioning that ghrelin levels are at their lowest in the morning even though you just fasted for about 12-14 hours. So, if you're considering skipping breakfast as part of your fasting routine, ask yourself if you're really hungry or if you're just eating out of habit and cravings.

Lastly, did you know that women naturally have higher ghrelin spikes? This is why we're more likely to be addicted to foods like chocolate and sugar.

So there you have it, a little insight into the hormone behind hunger and how you can control it through fasting. Let me know what you think in the comments!
